The lock is good but on a scale of 1-12 (12 being safest) this lock rates at a 7. This is Kryptonite's scale, not mine. Since I live in a downtown, sea-side area, bikes get stolen all the time. I use this lock in addition to a thick cable lock. Between locking the bike frame to a solid object using this lock, I intertwine the cable lock (figure 8 style) through & around the frame and through and around the tires. In doing this, even if they break this lock, they still can't ride off AND, they can't steal my tires very easily.Another suggestion... loose the quick release on your seat. It's hell having to stand and pedal if they steal your seat. Don't make it easy on them.

I had the same problem that other reviewers had. I ordered the product anyway because I believed that Kryptonite makes good locks and stands behind their products. I just took it out of the package and noticed a major flaw. The fitting is attached to the opposite side of the lock as it is in the picture (above) and you cannot slide it into the clamp without hitting the bike frame. This is hard to describe but like others above me, I realized that it doesn't work. I thought that this was too stupid of a problem to be real, so I wracked my brain for about 20 minutes trying to figure out why I was so dumb and couldn't figure it out. Turns out, I'm not the one who's dumb--whoever assembled this attachment is! I guess we'll just carry the lock on our handlebars or in a backpack, but as far as attaching the lock to the frame.... FORGET IT! Thanks for reading

So I initially wrote: "The lock may be fine but the mounting bracket is terrible (unless I'm missing something... In which case please tell me). The silver part on the 'U' lock itself, which is supposed to slide into the black plastic mounting bracket, faces the wrong way. It's hard to describe but basically you can't clip the lock onto your bike and have sit (or hang) within that triangle made by the main bars/beams. Instead it sticks out and will get in the way of your peddling. Very annoying."But I WAS missing something. You can use the Hex Wrench that comes with it to loosen and rotate the silver part (which I think is actually called the 'spline on the shackle'). So this lock mounting thing is not a problem. Go ahead and buy it. No extra tools or anything are required. I totally take back my bad review. I'm still only giving it 4 stars because they shouldn't sell it with the shackle tightened in a position that isn't useful to anyone.
