Audio recorded is really poor.So, first - I'm not a kid. I'm 41, and my Mom got me this for my birthday... and... I'm a kid at heart with a love for cameras.. and anything dealing with cars.. And I have a 3 year old son..I was really skeptical about this when I first saw it on tv at a toy show. It works, its neat, and its really compact. The video quality is actually OUTSTANDING for a camera of this size. Its self-powered with an internal rechargeable battery.. charges with a USB port. It took 45 min to charge the first time I used it. It will also charge off of a standard USB plug (like the one used to charge an iPhone or iPod).It's the same width as a standard hot wheels car, only longer. About the same weight.It has a front mounted camera and microphone. The rear has a USB port under a rubber flap, on the top is the charge indicator/record start top button.On the underside - its got a postage stamp sized color LCD screen and two buttons. Controls are really easy to use. The two buttons on the bottom switch between track use (indoor frame rate) and outdoor use (higher frame rate). They two buttons are also the play/stop and FF to the next clip. No editing is allowed on the car itself. this all must be done while attached to a PC or MAC. However you can delete entire clips on the car.There is a power switch on the side of the car to turn the entire thing on and off.The car seems fairly sturdy, not waterproof. Not meant to be in the dirt or sand. The screen could get scratched pretty easy since its on the underside. The wheels are FAST.. this car rolls super easy on a hardwood or smooth floor. They are larger then most hot wheel wheels and tires.This has a chance to be a great toy for an older child (over 10).. or fine with younger kids as long as a parent is there to help.Not only would this be fun to just play with on a track, or the floor - but the hard mount kit (included) allows you to strap the car to other objects, your arm, a helmet, a bike, etc.. your dog.. a real car... an R/C car.. a H.O. scale train set...Can hold about 12-20 min of video. There are two frame rates, 30 FPS and 60 FPS. 60 captures more action, but needs really good light (outdoors).. 30 is slower, and used for lower light areas.The quality is actually REALLY good. The files are .AVI format. A 20 second clip is about 10 meg. The car has an internal memory of 512 meg. Its not expandable.I've included a very short video clip of the car outside on our deck..This will be a fun toy with lots of capability for long term play.The USB port works fine on our MAC (OS 10 - Lion) as well as out PC (Windows XP). No drivers are needed, it shows up as a camera/drive when connected to the computer.The editing software is for Windows only, however I can't think its much better then what comes with computers today in the way of simple movie editing software (iMovie/Windows Movie Maker).. both programs support the .AVI format without any problems.Its expensive, but really.. really neat.. and will give your family a unique perspective on what its like to be a hot wheels car.. or a cheap home action cam.Audio is horrible. Its choppy and jumpy.. there is no audio playback on the car when reviewing your clips.The packing was pretty easy to open. However it does give the impression that the car comes with a track and loop - there is none in the box (and none is stated on the box in the parts listing)..I played with the car for part of the afternoon, it held up fine - however I saw that one of the wheels has a crack in it, on the external layer (the tire part).. its not falling apart.. but I am going to try to see if Mattel will replace it under warranty..One worry I do have is the camera lens is VERY small, and seems to be behind a pinhole like lens. If dirt or mud got into it, it would be very hard to clean.

It's fun for him to run to the mailbox now and record himself as he goes. He did this video on his school desk.Instructions say the battery will last about 45 minutes, but we've found it's more like 30 minutes.It's very simple to use. The top of the car has a record button and microphone. The camera lens is on the front of the car. The on/off switch is on the side, with the USB port at the back.It has three adhesive backed clips so you can permanently mount a clip to something like a bike helmet or the front of a bike. It also has a clip with a strap that can be worn on the wrist.The screen in a tiny LCD screen so you can get a bit of an idea as to what got recorded but really to see it you need to do that on your computer. We have a Mac and it is easy to download the video. The car comes with a USB to plug into the computer for downloading and recharging the battery but my Canon camera USB cord worked too.Just plug it in, wait for the "Video Racer" icon to appear, click on it, then click on the videos in the file to watch. It's that easy.If you want to save the videos, just drag them to your desktop.My son is really enjoying being able to record all sorts of fast motion. It would make a fun and unusual gift for a 8 to 13 year old. It's a bit expensive but if you are looking for something out of the ordinary that will get used more than just a few times, this is a good choice.

I gave this toy to a die cast afficianado to play with as I thought he would offer the best insights. The camera shot good video and the concept is original. I would think that it should have a little more memory for more footage. Durability ranked fairly high, but not for a careless kid. Overall impression is this is a fun and exciting toy. Downside it teh price, a kind of expensive toy.
