Our 5-year-old daughter asked for a remote-controlled car for Xmas - which she got - but we also bought this race car set for her. She loves it and is very good at it! As a kid, I had this sort of race car set so setup was quick, although it could be time consuming for the uninitiated. Any parent wishing to give this toy to their child needs to understand that these cars do run fast and their speed needs to be controlled. Our daughter caught on fairly quickly, maybe after 20 minutes or so. Mind you, I too needed to get the hang of it. Players need to be focused to make this work, impatient children (and adults!) are not likely to enjoy this toy. Also, please note that this toy is rated for children 8+. So, this toy is a good choice for age-appropriate children AND children able to focus and who are patient and persistent. Over Xmas we had other children over - aged 5 to 8 - all of them were curious and eager to play, but none of them were willing to spend much time with it when they realised they couldn't control the cars immediately.Having said all of this, my daughter and I enjoy playing with this toy. Racing side-by-side is a lot of fun, the loop is exciting and the cars do run fast! The fun and challenge is controlling the speed of the cars and watch them run fast and on the track. It brings out the competitive spirit, the ability to focus and hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

We purchased this for our 7 year old son and it's been great! It doesn't take that long to set up and is a lot of fun. My son has gotten a little frustrated because you have to practice to learn when to slow down a little around curves to keep the cars on the track. It's a very nice set and great for beginners. You cannot beat the price!!!! We looked all around for these and this was by far the best price we could find for the type of set we wanted.

OK, usually speed is a good thing when it comes to race cars, right? In this case, it's nearly impossible to keep the cars from flying off the track on every corner. Speed is awesome, but control is required - and the controllers that come with this set are just not responsive enough to keep the cars on the track. In addition, within 20 minutes of getting the track set up for the first time, one of the controllers started getting really jumpy. The car would sit there twitching but not moving and then suddenly fire off down the track. I took the controller apart and discovered that one of the two variable resistor boards wasn't lined of with the other one and consequently wasn't making full contact with the slider unless it had help from gravity or shaking.Also counting against the "durability" score are the flimsy plastic clips that hold the sections of track together. Half of them are already broken from building/tearing down the set 4 or 5 times. I've set it up for my son each time and I'm not rough on them.My son was very excited on Christmas morning, but we can't use this toy for very long until he gets so frustrated from constantly retrieving his car that it stops being fun. I have to say it's not too fun for an adult either... :( In summary, I would have expected this low level of quality from something that cost about half what this set did.
