Since I was growing up, I have always trusted the name Crayola and have used their crayons and other art related supplies and activities. Naturally, when I found this new creative idea for buddings artists to have their pictures displayed, I had to buy it.This is a great unit as it helps kids of all ages be creative and use the "right" side of their brains.This unit comes with the palette, the bush and brush clips and 20 sheets of paper great but the upsetting thing is 20 sheets of paper doesn't last that long. It also has to be Crayola paper, which you have to purchase in a pad of 24 sheets, which means this Paint Palette, becomes more expensive.It is wonderful for a child's imagination because once they dip the brush into the red paint it blushes red or whatever other color they decide to use. It comes with a total of six colors. The color wonder paint is clear so the only place it will appear is when you put it on the specially color wonder paper. Although, this is a wonderful idea for children of all ages it can become costly if your child enjoys to draw like mine does.

The clear paints turn into colors on the page, almost like invisible ink that becomes visible a couple seconds after writing. The paints all look like clear jelly, but they react with the special paper to create different pastel colors. My daughter was entertained by these paints for a little while, but she was a bit confused when there was a brief lag time (a few seconds) between painting and seeing the colors (she is 2-years-old). With the clear paints and the thick brush, it is difficult to paint anything with precision. Only thick lines are possible, and it's difficult to see how much paint you have on the brush. Also, all of the colors react with the paper to create pastel colors that look like watercolors. You can't make bolder colors by using more paint, and after awhile, all the pictures painted with these paints start to look the same because the colors do not vary no matter what technique is used for application. Also, as others have mentioned, the lights on the paint palette are pretty useless and just flash on and off indiscriminantly.On the upside, the clear paints only turn into colors when they're on the special paper, so there is less danger to surrounding furniture, clothes, etc.

Having a 5 year old who loves drawing and painting, choosing this product as a present for him was a no brainer. Setting it up was not as easy as expected, for starters you need to remove the battery cover with a screwdriver, once the batteries (not included) are in place you need to snap the paint strips. I may have gotten a defective unit because only a few of them snapped in their right place, so when my kid tried to open the small paint buckets, they all came out of place, I tried several times to make them snap into place and only a few them seemed to fit correctly.Once we went through the hassle of setting it up, when he saw it working he got really excited about it, the palette turns on with the color you are selecting as soon as you dip the brush into it. It is important to follow the directions included accordingly so the colors are positioned correctly (otherwise you may get random colors turning on instead of the color you are selecting). The included "paint" is more of a white gel that will only reveal a color once you paint with it on the special paper included. Only 20 Color Wonder sheets are included, parents should know these will go fast so prepare to buy extra paper separately. The brush included looks cheap in my opinion and it is so bulky that it is quite difficult to paint with it, my kid had issues when painting details because of this. Also, keep in mind that the color will reveal once you paint on the special paper, so for example, my kid drew a red car, and when he tried to paint blue windows in it he was disappointed as the paper had already turned red, so once you paint with a color you cannot paint over it, which makes sense for an adult but may not for a 5 year old.In the end, the wow-factor of the color lights was gone after 5 minutes playing with it, I just saw how the color wonder papers flew by and honestly, I don't think I will be buying extra paper, I think Crayola has better products to offer for the same price. Yes the special gel does not stain clothing or skin and it is easy to clean, however, I truly think it is a very impractical product.
